Well, actually, Corn Palace Cam. For the uninitiated, the Mitchell Corn Palace, which bills itself as “The World’s Only Corn Palace,” is a building made out of… you guessed it: corn. It is torn down each year (due to rotting and birds, I presume) and rebuilt with a different theme. This year’s seems to be Rodeo 2007. When my friend Jon and I drove across the country, we stopped at the Corn Palace. We had to drive around Mitchell, SD for a bit to find parking, then had to walk to the palace. Never before in my life had I actually felt uncomfortable in my own skin. I felt the people watching us. I felt like they KNEW I was a Jew. I fully expected them to come over and start looking for my horns. But, the Corn Palace is a free roadside attraction. If you are driving through South Dakota, you may as well stop there (Wall Drug too). Why? Well, because it’s THERE and made out of corn.
